Hundreds of North Carolina students stepped outside the classroom and into the real world this summer. Students worked directly with businesses to tackle authentic challenges, gaining practical experience and the confidence that comes from solving problems that matter.
Across the state, the momentum was clear:
-
833 students worked in teams to develop solutions for real businesses.
-
77 businesses partnered with student teams to offer direct problems from their businesses for students to solve ranging from customer engagement, marketing, human resources, and community service.
- The impact reached deep and wide—18 school districts statewide participated in Spark Teamship, with representation from urban centers, rural counties, and everything in between.
One student from Henderson County put it this way: “It’s a fun activity to do outside of school and can really give you confidence and make you feel successful. It also gives you a feeling of accomplishment when you are done with it. Everybody should give it a try at least once.”
Another, from Carteret County, shared: “It’s engaging, interactive, and allows you to be involved in your local community. It helps teach you skills that you can use for the rest of your life.”
For business partners, Teamship was more than an opportunity to give back—it was a chance to gain fresh ideas. An impressive 91% of partners said they are likely to use at least part of the solutions students proposed.
A representative from the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce shared: “I’m impressed with the interest, attitude, and effort given by the students. They asked good questions, did research, and offered excellent recommendations. We will implement their ideas.”
As one Johnston County partner put it: “These young adults showcased critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Having a strong foundation is so important in life, and this program helps build it.”
The Summer 2025 outcomes tell a powerful story: when students are given meaningful opportunities to solve real problems, they don’t just rise to the challenge—they thrive. They leave with the skills, confidence, and community connections that prepare them for what’s next, whether that’s college, a career, or the next challenge life puts in front of them.
